Because of the high saturated fat content, coconut oil has been shunned for very long.It was assumed that coconut oil can raise cholesterol and would possibly lead to heart disease. But recent research started to suggest that adding coconut oil to a person’s diet can be beneficial. In fact it is useful for other parts of the body, which means its health benefits goes far beyond the stomach.

Weight Loss

According to a study done in July 2009, it was found that women who were given coconut oil everyday for 12 weeks showed reduced weight in their abdominal areas when compared to those who were given soy bean oil where all the participants eat a balanced diet and exercising for the same amount of time. The abdominal fat are more likely to contribute to health problems and harder to get rid of, when compared to any other body parts.

Lowers Cholesterol

“The saturated fat in coconut oil is mostly lauric acid, a medium-chain saturated fatty acid that appears to have a more neutral effect on heart health when compared to longer-chain saturated fats found in meats and dairy products,” Wendy Bazilian, dietician and author of The SuperFoodsRxDiet, told Shape Magazine.

Some research has even shown that lauric acid can increase the good high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Coconut oil also lowers bad low-density lipo protein (LDL) cholesterol by helping to produce pregnenolone, which is used in hormone production. By encouraging hormone production, the thyroid gland is able to function properly. Improper thyroid gland function has been associated with higher cholesterol levels, according to the Dr. Oz Show.

Conditions Hair

Coconut oil contains medium-chain fatty acids which makes it easier to be absorbed by hair, which prevents it from damage and loss and keeping them moisturised.“I use it in my hair and on my skin for deep conditioning,” Tasneen Bhatia, Md, owner of the Atlanta Centre for Holistic and Integrative Medicine, told Prevention Magazine.

Moisturises Skin

Coconut oil is rich in antioxidants and vitamin E. When it is used in the body, conditions associated with dry, scaly, and itchy skin reduces. Other research has shown that it can hydrate and prevent water loss in the skin.

Because of its antioxidant properties, it can be used as a facial moisturiser which reduces the effects of ageing.A double cleansing method can also be used which is found to be very effective.
