Tips to preserve coconut oil

We have seen a lot of interesting facts about coconut and coconut oil.Today we will look on how to preserve coconut oil.

The most important thing that you need to ensure while using oil is that it should be stored properly so that it remains usable and doesn’t oxidise and turn rancid. The chemical composition of the oil and the external factors depends on the extend of oxidation.

Oil containing high percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids may get easily oxidized when subject to heat and oxygen.It is adviced to store small quantities of these oil so that one doesn’t have to use the same opened for too long.

Coconut oil on the other hand contains very less amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids and are rich in saturated fatty acids and hence its stable in most adverse conditions.

Here are some tips to preserve coconut oil:

  • Coconut oil can as such go upto 2 years without any issues

  • Avoid keeping it in direct sunlight

  • Above 75F coconut oil turns into liquid state which does not mean it has gone rancid, no chemical changes occurs.

  • Under cold conditions it turns into solid state which again is just a physical change.

  • Preferably store coconut oil in wide mouthed glass jar than plastic containers

  • Try to avoid heating in microwave as this might cause adverse effects.
